Action for Clean Communities ( A4CC) Youth Led Action for Healthy Communities
The Action for Clean Communities (A4CC) is a youth-led initiative that aims to combat single-use plastic, indiscriminate waste disposal, and open burning of waste in the Upper West Region of Ghana. Launched by Info Radio, a local radio station, in collaboration with THIEA International, a German-based non-governmental organization (NGO), the project has made significant strides in mobilizing thousands of young people to take action towards sustainable waste management.
The project's objective is multifaceted, focusing on changing behaviors towards clean communities, introducing sustainable packaging methods to replace single-use plastic bags, and promoting environmental consciousness among residents.
By engaging with young people, the project aims to empower them to become change-makers in their communities, encouraging them to adopt positive behaviors that reduce waste and promote a cleaner environment.
The A4CC project is still ongoing, with the support of Engagement Global, a German funding agency.
The initiative has been instrumental in raising awareness about the negative impacts of single-use plastics, indiscriminate waste disposal, and open burning of waste on the environment and public health. Through various outreach activities, including radio broadcasts, community events, and school programs, the project has reached thousands of young people and encouraged them to take action.
One of the most significant outcomes of the project has been the change in behaviors among residents. The campaign has enabled more people to become conscious about their environment and adopt positive behaviors to reduce waste in their communities. Many residents have reported a significant reduction in their use of single-use plastics, opting instead for reusable bags and containers. Additionally, there has been a marked decrease in open burning of waste and indiscriminate disposal.

"Bang - Kuobu"- ( Promoting Sustainable Smart Agricultural Practices
Info Radio has taken a significant step in promoting climate-smart agricultural practices among farmers through its weekly radio program. The initiative, in collaboration with GIZ REACH, aims to provide agricultural extension services to thousands of farmers who previously had no access to such services.
Through the program, Info Radio is disseminating vital information on good agricultural practices to farmers, focusing on climate-resilient techniques to improve food production and enhance their livelihoods. The program's content is carefully crafted to address the specific needs and concerns of farmers in the Upper West Region, taking into account the region's unique climate and soil conditions.
The program's impact has been remarkable, with thousands of farmers now accessing valuable agricultural advice and guidance through the radio. This has enabled them to adopt improved farming practices, which has led to increased yields, reduced post-harvest losses, and improved crop diversification.
One of the key benefits of the program is that it reaches a vast audience of farmers who may not have access to traditional agricultural extension services. This includes small-scale farmers, women, and youth who may not have the resources or mobility to attend workshops or training sessions. Through the radio program, they are now able to receive timely and relevant information on best practices in agriculture, allowing them to make informed decisions about their farms.
The program's content is designed to be practical and applicable, covering topics such as crop rotation, soil conservation, irrigation management, and pest management. It also provides information on climate-resilient crops and practices, as well as market trends and pricing information.
The success of the program has been evident in the feedback received from farmers who have participated in the program. Many have reported an increase in their yields and profits, as well as improved management of their farms. The program has also helped to build a sense of community among farmers, with many reporting that they feel more connected to other farmers and more empowered to take control of their own agricultural practices.
