Young Female Influencers hosts Green Minds Movement to tackle climate change in Wa

The Young Female Influencers (YFI), through its Green Minds Initiative, held a Green Minds Movement workshop in Wa, Upper West Region, aimed at equipping young people with the tools to drive climate action.

The event, held on December 21, 2024, attracted enthusiastic youth from various backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to addressing climate change.

Ms. Linda Dassah, Project Lead for the Green Minds Initiative, emphasized the importance of mobilizing young advocates to tackle the pressing issue of climate change.

"The workshop's goal was to foster collaboration among young changemakers, equipping them with advocacy, leadership, and action-planning skills. We also focused on encouraging community-driven solutions by providing a platform for dialogue, learning, and shared commitment," she said.

Ms. Dassah underscored the need to build grassroots environmental advocates who can lead sustainable initiatives.

"A sustainable future depends on empowering individuals to take meaningful actions at the community level," she added.

Mr. Mohammed Awal, Business Development Head of Noni Hub, who delivered a talk on "The Role of Technology and Entrepreneurship in Building a Sustainable Future," highlighted how individual lifestyles and community collaborations can significantly influence climate action.

Mr. Awal called for leveraging technology to mitigate climate change through digital literacy, system innovations, and green solutions.

"Promoting circular economic trends, such as energy efficiency, recycling, and eco-friendly production, is essential," he stated.

He further discussed the importance of sustainable design in products and services, transportation innovation, and the adoption of solar energy.

He praised efforts like the construction of solar power plants in Kaleo and Lawra in the Upper West Region as promising steps toward cleaner energy and encouraged policies to make renewable energy more accessible.

Mr Awal drew interrelationships among the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and thus urged attendees to integrate these principles into their entrepreneurial ventures and daily lives to combat climate change.

Some participants expressed satisfaction that the workshop inspired and equipped them to champion climate action within their communities.

“The Green Minds workshop has inspired me to engage with others in my community and to promote eco-friendly practices. It is great to see how much we can achieve when we come together for a common cause, such as addressing climate change,” one participant, Dorcas Sumong said.

The Green Minds Movement workshop reinforced the idea that while humans contribute to climate change, they also hold the power to mitigate its effects through building synergies and choosing responsible lifestyles.
