The Assembly Member for Yiziiri Electoral Area in the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Mr Joesph Bapuora, has lamented the lack of a Junior High School (JHS) in the entire Electoral Area.
He said the situation led pupils in the area to trek for several hours over a long distance to attend school in neighbouring communities. Mr. Bapuora made this known in an interview with Info Radio over the weekend.
He disclosed that the situation has also put particularly female pupils at risk of pregnancies and termination of their education.
“My colleague’s assembly members were laughing at me recently when I mentioned that the children walk about five hours to attend JHS. The whole electoral area cannot boast of a single JHS. That is one of the problems that worry me a lot.”
He mentioned that the current situation has placed a burden on parents as they have to transport their children to Tangasia, Kalsegra, or Nadowli to attend JHS.
He also shared a story about a relative who had to walk to Nadowli for school. Unfortunately, she eventually dropped out due to becoming pregnant, as she was often given rides by young boys on motorbikes to and from school.
Mr Bapuora appealed to the government and other benevolent entities to at least come to the aid of the Electoral Area by providing a JHS in one of the three communities in the area.
The Assembly Member also urged parents and guardians in the Yiziiri Electoral Area to always endeavor to enroll their children in school when they are of school-going age. He said it was common to see children of school-going age roaming in town during school hours.
