Women of Naahaa, a predominantly farming community in the Gudaayiri Electoral Area of the Wa East District have expressed unhappiness about the situation of potable water in their community.
They said women at the community go through a lot of challenges to access potable water at the community.
According to them, it badly affects their businesses as they have to spend valuable time searching for water.
Speaking to Info Radio at the community, a resident, Barata Hudu said the current borehole in use intermittently breaks down causing considerable stress and inconvenience.
She said women most often are saddled with the responsibility of contributing to repair the borehole and that, they have become wearied from the continuous payments.
Memunata Alhassan, another resident, said they queue at boreholes waiting in turns to fetch water which takes them days to weeks for only a basin of water.
“We sleep at the borehole site till daybreak waiting in vain to fetch water, you only get water in a week’s time and that one basin of water is what you will use for the following week,” she narrated.
Baseta Abdul-Salam repeated that they spend their spousal nights without their husbands as they mostly sleep overnight at the borehole and, sometimes, the stream.
She noted that the borehole presently in use does not flow ceaselessly as they have to ‘pump and wait’ for another hour for water to rise up.
The residents, therefore, called on the government and benevolent organizations and individuals to come to their support.
