The Kaleo Dagibile Women’s Group has thrown its weight behind Mary Haruna's nomination as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Nadowli-Kaleo District.
The group is urging assembly members to approve her nomination come April 28, 2025. Mary Haruna's nomination has been a subject of interest, as she is the only female nominee for the DCE position in the Upper West Region.
Despite being excluded from the initial shortlist of 33 applicants submitted by the vetting committee, President John Dramani Mahama nominated her for the position.
Her nomination has sparked controversy, with some accusing Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin of meddling in the nomination process. The Speaker has refuted the accusation by the NDC group.
At a press conference held in Kaleo, the Convener of the group, Tuoruu Emelia, described Madam Haruna as more than just a political figure.
“Madam Mary Haruna is not just a leader by title, but one by action. Through her initiative, our group of over 200 women was formed and empowered with skills in soap-making, small-scale business management, and home-based production. She has given us the tools to build better lives for ourselves and our families.

The group emphasized that Madam Haruna’s contributions stretch beyond politics. Her community-driven programs, particularly those focused on vocational training and entrepreneurship, have significantly impacted young people and rural women, offering hope and economic stability.
“We are confident that Madam Mary Haruna possesses the leadership qualities, grassroots experience, and inclusive vision to drive real change in the Nadowli-Kaleo District,” the group declared.
They also lauded her ability to unite people across gender and political lines, urging Assembly Members to confirm her appointment unanimously.
“Confirming her is not just about politics or party loyalty,” they said, “It’s about the future of our district — about choosing a leader who represents development, inclusion, and opportunity for all.”
