The national Wangara chief, Masaba Alhaji Yussif Fanyinamah III, admonished the Wangara community in the Upper West Region to embrace their diversity and foster a culture of tolerance and understanding.
He made the admonishment in his address as the special guest of honour at the Benkadi Association, Upper West Regional Conference held in Wa.
The conference which brought together Wangara’s across the region and beyond. It also showcased the rich culture of the Wangara tribe.
He said, “As we organised our ancestors who thought as the value of peace, unity and harmony, let us embrace our diversity, celebrate our difference for they are the fabric that weaved our community together.”
The conference was on the theme: “Promoting Peace, Unity and Nurturing National Cohesion of the Wangara in the Region for Nation Building.”
He mentioned that the Wangara and the Wala people must build bridges but not walls because they share a common heritage and custom. Masaba Fanyinamah III emphasized that peace is the foundation upon which nations are built.
“The Wangara people have historical connection with the Wala people of the Upper West Region of Ghana. The Wangara’s were instrumental in spreading Islam in the region and Ghana as a whole,” he added.
He also mentioned that the settlement patterns of Wangara's ancestors were influenced by their economic and security interests, religious considerations, and cultural preferences.
“Let us nurture our youth, our future leaders to be ambassadors of peace and unity. Let us empower our women, the backbone of our society to be the champion of our unity,” Masaba Fanyinamah III added.
The Sunche Naa, Osman Daudi, who represented the Wa Naa, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, in a solidarity message, noted that development cannot occur without unity and co-existence. He commended the Wangara youth in the region for organizing the conference.
