The Wa West District Education Directorate has organized a reading festival in Wechiau for 96 pupils from 16 circuits in the district.
The aim of the festival is to enhance the reading skills of pupils at the basic school level. Mr. Ametus Tug-uu, the Wa West District Education Director, emphasized the importance of reading as a gateway to the world, and highlighted that the festival is intended to instill a reading culture among school children while fostering healthy competition.
The reading festival was supported by the USAID in partnership with the Ghana Education Service. Six pupils, two from each of Basic One to Three, emerged as winners of the reading festival and will represent the district at the regional level.
Mr. Tug-uu also mentioned that the literacy skills of the children would improve through the festival.
“You know reading is a pathway to the world and for that matter when you organize it for children to participant it cultivate the habit of reading in children.
“Of late our children don’t like reading but what we are doing now, they would have that interest of reading,” he stated.
He explained that all schools in the district participated in the reading competition at the school level, and each school presented two pupils at the circuit level. The best from each circuit were then selected to compete at the inter-circuit level.
Speaking about the district’s performance at the basic level, Mr. Tug-uu mentioned that the pupils' performance has not been the best. However, he noted that the district has seen an improvement since he took over as the Education Director.
“The performance hasn’t been the best but is not peculiar to only Wa West, is a wide spread kind of thing. All over the country, other districts, they are also encountering the same problems that we have. But, I want to add that since I came there has been an improvement when they do write the BECE.”
Mr. R.Y. Mahama, representing the paramount chief of the Wechiau Traditional Area, encouraged teachers to do their best in educating the children in the district.
He assured the traditional council's support for any educational programs requiring their input or assistance.
Additionally, awards were presented to the top six pupils from Basic One to Three, who will represent the district at the regional level, in recognition of their outstanding performance.
