Wa,Ghana - The Upper West Regional Police Command has been accused of failing to bring to book serial killers who have been terrorizing the people of Wa municipality, resulting in a loss of confidence in the police's ability to solve crimes.
In the past two years, a total of 13 people, including 12 security guards and a civilians, have been brutally murdered and mutilated in the Wa municipality. Despite the gruesome nature of the crimes, the police have failed to arrest and prosecute any suspects linked to the killings.
The latest incident occurred in June 2024, when two security guards were killed and one was mutilated. Just last week, a driver mate was also killed similarly, with the police providing little information to residents about the progress of their investigations.
The inaction of the Upper West Police Command has left residents in perpetual fear, with many expressing frustration and disappointment at the lack of progress in solving the cases.
"We are living in fear every day, we don't know when our turn will come," said Mr Abdul Ganiu, a resident of Wa. "The police seem to be doing nothing to bring these criminals to justice. We want them to be proactive and keep us updated on their investigations."
Another resident echoed similar sentiments, saying "We are tired of hearing promises from the police that they are doing everything possible to solve these cases, but nothing seems to be happening. We want results, not empty promises."
The police's failure to update residents on the whereabouts of a suspect Mr Kankani Adongo arrested in September 2022 has also added to the frustration. The suspect was taken into custody in connection with the serial killings, but since then, there has been no word on whether they have been charged or released.
The situation is now so dire that residents are calling on the Upper West Police Command to take immediate action to find the perpetrators of the serial killings. They are also demanding that the police keep them updated on their investigations.
"We want the police to be transparent and accountable," said another resident. "We want to know what is being done to catch these criminals and bring them to justice. We want our trust in the police restored."
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) must take immediate action to address this crisis of confidence in the Upper West Regional Police Command. The people of Wa deserve better than to live in fear of being murdered and mutilated without any hope of justice.
