The Wa East District Assembly in the Upper West Region has been left to rot due to the lack of supervision and maintenance by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Dr. Ewura S.K. Mahama.

The assembly complex, which serves as the administrative hub for the district, is in a state of disrepair, with peeling paint, dirty and broken floors, broken windows and toilets, and overgrown weeds. The washrooms are out of use due to poor maintenance and a lack of cleaning.

A visit to the Wa East district assembly last Friday by the Info Radio Team saw the district administrative hub abandoned with no officer at post, including the DCE, who was scheduled to grant an interview to Info Radio.

A cross-section of assembly members speaking to Info Radio about the poor state of the district assembly structure expressed their frustration with the state of the complex, stating that it is a disgrace to the district and hinders their ability to effectively carry out their duties.

One assembly member speaking to Info Radio lamented that "the DCE has failed to maintain the assembly complex after assuming office despite several calls from members.

The assembly members have called on the government and the regional minister to intervene and address the issue. They believe that the neglect of the assembly complex is a reflection of the lack of priority given to development in the Wa East District.

A cross-section of residents in Funsi, speaking to Info Radio on the issues, accused the DCE and officers of the assembly of abandoning their offices and rather living in their homes in Wa, the regional capital of the Upper West Region.

According to them, for the past 3 months, they have not set eyes on the DCE in his office, a situation they said is hindering development in the area.

When contacted for his response, Hon. Dr. Ewura S.K. Mahama declined to comment on the issue and said he was busy campaigning to enable him win the NPP parliamentary primaries schedule on Saturday, December 2nd. He, however, promised to address the issues raised after the NPP parliamentary primaries.

The Wa East District Assembly's state of disrepair raises questions about accountability and governance at the local level. The district's residents deserve better from their elected officials, who are supposed to serve them with dignity and efficiency. It is time for action to be taken to restore the assembly complex and ensure that it becomes a source of pride for the people of Wa East.
