Consumers of water and electricity in the Upper West Region are unhappy about the recent increase in utility tariffs, which will be effective from July 1 to September 30, 2024.
The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 3.45% increase in electricity tariffs for lifeline consumers, and a 5.84% increase for all other residential consumers not included in the lifeline category.
Additionally, water tariffs will also increase by 5.16% for all consumers during this period.
The reasons for the approval of the increase are attributed to the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Ghana cedi, the domestic inflation rate, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel.
The commission also took into account the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians in reaching this decision.
But some consumers who spoke to Info Radio said the recent upward adjustments are unbearable.
"I drive, and we currently make a small income from our company. If you are increasing utility tariffs now, you are indirectly telling us to leave this country. You want to raise prices even though the lights are unstable? It saddens my heart to hear that.”
“We are not happy with the increment. Even as farmers, our farms are not producing enough food for us. Our children are unable to study at night because we are unable to purchase electricity, and you are increasing fuel, lights, and water."
