Vice President Bawumia Aims to Train 1 Million Youth in Digital Skills if Elected President

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that if elected president in the upcoming December election, he would train 1 million Ghanaian youth in coding and software applications.

He made these remarks while addressing Imams in Wa on Sunday, May 19, on the first day of his Upper West Region Tour.

“I want us to train our youth in digital skills. Training the youth in digital skills is not difficult; you don’t even need a degree. All you need is somebody who can read and write and we can train you to be a Coder, Software Engineer and you will be fine.

“You can be sitting in Jeffisi and be working in America or Canada or wherever. You don’t need to leave here. You can create jobs for the youth and so our target is to train one million youth in digital skills and they will be employable across the world and in Ghana,” he stated.

Speaking on the importance of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme,  Dr. Bawumia noted that the introduction of the FSHS programme in 2017 significantly increased senior high school enrollment from 800,000 to 1.4 million.

He added that the largest enrollments in senior high school education are from the five northern regions.

“And what is very important is that the largest enrolment in terms of percentage to senior high school education is coming from the five northern regions. The top five in enrolment are the five northern regions.”

Shiekh Ahmed Yakubu, Deputy Chief Imam of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaal, Upper West Region, lamented the inadequate number of Arabic teachers in public schools.

He appealed to the NPP flagbearer to ensure the recruitment of Arabic teachers to support the study of the subject in public schools.
