Residents of Varempere in the Wa West District have appealed to the government to connect their community to the national electricity grid to improve their social and economic lives.
They expressed disappointment that they have been neglected in the connection of electricity to the community as neigbouring communities are enjoying electricity while they still live in darkness.
In an interview with Info Radio at the community, Mr. Banaabo Jato, a resident, lamented that their children are going through challenges since they have no access to electricity to learn at night.
He noted their schoolchildren are left behind when it comes to digital technologies and computer literacy due to the unavailability of electricity.
He said residents of Varempere have to trek to Chansah or Nakore, neighbouring communities with electricity which are a distance away, before they can charge their mobile phones and other electrical gadgets.
He blamed politicians for consistently promising to connect them to the national grid every electioneering period and never fulfilling the promise after the elections.
Madam Asana Zach, another resident, said electrical poles erected in the community for its electrification had been left to rot.
He said the poles were erected for over 5 years today and have since been abandoned.
Madam Fatuma Fatawu also indicated that the lack of electricity has negatively impacted healthcare delivery in the community.
She said the health facility does not function to capacity as it is unable to preserve certain medical consumables that require electricity, adding that healthcare services cannot be rendered at the facility at night.
She lamented that the phenomenon has mostly compelled patients to seek medical attention at Vieri, a nearby community, or Wa, the regional capital.
She disclosed that the community has mobilized resources and built a maternal ward for the facility but there is no midwife to help them because of the lack of electricity.
The residents, therefore, appealed to the government through the Wa West District Assembly to connect the community to the grid.
