Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Children blames society as failing children


Acting Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Children, Madam Matilda Chireh has apportioned blames on the society as failing children in respect of their rights and privileges.


Madam Matilda said even though strenuous efforts have been made by the society, it is to be blamed because the society has failed in in some directions in ensuring the good upbringing of its children.


She said this in interview with Info Radio on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of the African Child.


She noted that the African Children’s Charter to which Ghana is a signatory, as part of efforts to create an enabling environment for the growth and development of the African child, has adopted the Agenda 2040 to restore the dignity and better the lives of children.


She said one of the aspirations of the Agenda 2040 is to ensure that every children have access to good quality healthcare but she lamented that children are disadvantaged in this area.


She cited that the health of children sometimes gets deteriorated and leads to complications due to parents’ non-responsiveness to the health concerns of their children.


She added that non-existence of healthcare facilities in some parts of the country is also a jeopardy to the heath needs of children.


On education, one of the aspirations of the Agenda 2040, Madam Matilda continued that the education of children in the country despite the numerous government interventions like the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) and School Feeding Programme, remains a genuine concern to the Children’s Department.


She affirmed that children enrollment in schools in low while dropout is on the increase.


Madam Matilda therefore call on the government, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and all members of the society to contribute every bit of their societal roles to see to the growth and development of the children.
