The Upper West Regional Committee on HIV/AIDS has held its end-of-year meeting, bringing together leaders from District and Municipal Assemblies, Ghana Health Services, Ghana Education Service, religious groups, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The gathering, held in Wa, served as a platform to review progress, discuss challenges, and strategize interventions to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in the region.
In his address, Mr. Osei-Bonsu Gyamfi, the Upper West Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, highlighted several measures taken by the commission to prevent the spread of HIV. He revealed that over 3,000 condoms had been distributed in the last quarter as part of efforts to promote safe sex practices.
However, Mr. Gyamfi expressed concern over delays in the release of HIV/AIDS funds by the District Assemblies; a situation he said was hampering the commission’s efforts.
“The District Assembly Common Fund too the component for HIV/AIDS doesn’t come. Anytime you go to the assemblies they say it is not there, it has been borrowed…no more, no funds.”
He called on the media to intensify advocacy on HIV/AIDS-related issues to foster greater awareness and support for the cause.
Mr. Dramani Abdul-Razak, the Upper West Regional Operations Manager for Hope for Future, emphasized the need to address stigmatization against persons living with HIV/AIDS.
He disclosed that his organization is implementing various projects aimed at reducing stigma and ensuring better integration of HIV/AIDS patients into society.
