
The Upper West Region has made a significant improvement in the 2024 holistic assessment with a score of 4.0, an appreciation from the 3.8 score in 2023.
That was the cumulative score representing the general improvement in the health sector indicators in the year under review.
For instance, the region made a modest improvement in the first-trimester visit of pregnant women to the health facility, from 72.4 per cent in 2023 to 76. 8 percent in 2024.
Also, Antenatal clinic visits increased from 90.8 per cent in 2023 to 91.2 per cent in 2024 while anaemia in pregnant women reduced from 44.2 per cent in 2023 to 40.2 per cent in 2024, neonatal deaths reduced from 5/1000 Live Births in 2023 to 4/1000 Live births in 2024.
However, maternal mortality increased from 70/100,000 Live Births in 2023 to 75/100,000 Live births in the year under review, while Antiretroviral coverage significantly increased from 53.9 per cent in 2023 to 96 per cent in 2024.
Dr Damien Punguyire, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, revealed this in Wa during the opening of the 2024 annual health sector performance review meeting.
The review meeting was on the theme: “Strengthening Disease Surveillance for Early Detection and Response to Outbreaks: Leveraging the Network of Practices Approach” with the Ahafo Region as the peer review.
