
The Upper West Regional Police Intelligence Department (PID), commonly referred to as the "Anti Robbery" and "Narcotics" unit, has demonstrated remarkable commitment to combating motorbike theft and enhancing community safety, particularly within the Wa Municipality. Despite facing numerous challenges, the department’s relentless efforts have led to significant accomplishments, including the recovery of stolen motorbikes, prosecution of suspects, disruption of illicit drug activities, and the return of livestock to their rightful owners.
According to Info Radio sources, the Upper West PID has successfully recovered over ten motorbikes from December 2024 to January 2025. The owners were able to identify their stolen vehicles, underscoring the effectiveness of the department's operations. In addition to vehicle recovery, several suspects have been arrested and prosecuted, though some remain at large after absconding, leaving behind key evidence.
The department has also made strides in livestock recovery, with over 110 cattle retrieved from various locations and reunited with their owners, contributing to enhanced community safety for the municipality’s population of more than 107,000 residents.
The Effective intelligence gathering and analysis by the Upper West PID have played a crucial role in the PID’s ability to track and recover stolen motorbikes and livestock. The department has established strong relationships with local communities, which have greatly facilitated information sharing and cooperation in crime prevention initiatives. Strategic patrols have been implemented to deter and detect incidents of motorbike theft and other criminal activities.
Corporal Rashid Abdulai of the Upper West Regional Police Public Affairs Unit in a statement to Info Radio emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by the PID, stating that additional resources—such as equipment and funding—are necessary to sustain and expand their operations.
Looking ahead to 2025, Corporal Rashid Abdulai indicated that, the PID plans to enhance ongoing community engagement and support, which are critical to maintaining momentum in the fight against motorbike theft and other criminal activities. The Upper West Police Intelligence department also aims to bolster its capabilities through training and improvement programs to better address emerging security challenges.
