The Trades Union Congress (TUC) says it has advanced plans towards the celebrations of this years’ workers day popularly known as May Day.
Speaking in an interview with Info Radio in Wa, the Upper West Regional Secretary of the TUC, Godwin Gariba noted that they have put in place measures for the swift take of the May Day celebration on May 1, 2022.
He said the celebration would feature a route march through some principal streets of the Wa town before finally congregating at the Wa Jubilee Park for the official proceedings.
He added that they would carry out general health screening for participants as part of the celebration.
Mr Gariba stated that the celebration of the May Day marks the commemoration of workers and for that matter pioneers who have struggle for collective agreements between employees and employers.
He added it was the struggle of those pioneers that birthed the collective work agreements workers enjoy today.
Thus, he emphasized that May Day celebration was very essential and beneficial.
The Regional Secretary, commenting at the backdrop of recent sporadic labour unrests in the country, said the TUC is working in tandem with all stakeholders to ensure better conditions of service for all unionized workers.
Among the recent industrial actions was that of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) who were striking over their market premium and other allowances which lasted close to two months.
The others were that of Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), the Colleges of Education Non-Teaching Staff Association of Ghana (CENTSAG) and the ongoing strike of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana, (CLOGSAG).
Ghanaian workers were currently experiencing the negative effects of inflations as costs of commodities were astronomically rising leading to high cost of living which could not to sustained by their present salaries.
