Traditional leaders in Wa East District have met with military officers from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Accra, to deliberate on the extraction of natural resources in the district.
The traditional leaders held the meeting with military officers in Manwe during the latter’s research visit on mining to the Wa East District.
Speaking to Info Radio, the Assembly Member for Manwe Electoral Area, Mr Ali Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the chief of Manwe, said they have realized the concession given to the Azumah Resources Ghana Limited for prospecting has exceeded the designated time period for prospecting.
He also noted that the company had not released the 50 per cent of the land used for the gold prospecting which is supposed to be given back to the land owners after designated three years of prospecting per the law.
The chief noted that if the concession is allocated to the community it will help mitigate illegal mining and crime within the Wa East District and also create employment for the youth in the district and the region.
The military officers were on a research project on mining in the country.
The research is being carried out in the Upper West, Central, Western and Bono Regions.
