Tensions Rise in Bawku as Parliamentary Candidate Suspends Campaign Amid Crisis

In a concerning development regarding the ongoing Bawku crisis, Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, the Parliamentary Candidate for the Zebilla Constituency, has announced the suspension of his campaign activities.

This decision comes in light of troubling reports indicating a potential resurgence of conflict in the Kusaug Traditional Area (KTA), particularly with the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre to the region.

Dr. Krugu expressed deep concern over recent events that could exacerbate tensions in Bawku. His apprehensions primarily stem from the controversial enskinment of Alhaji Seidu Abagre as a rival Bawku Naba by the Nayiri in February 2023, an act that the government quickly condemned as illegitimate and a threat to national security.

In a statement released on February 15, 2023, the government reaffirmed the legitimacy of the current Bawku Naba, Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, emphasizing that the stability of the region hinges on this recognition, which has been ratified by both the Upper East Regional House and the National House of Chiefs.  Despite government efforts, including the issuance of a High Court arrest warrant for Abagre, the situation has remained perilous.

Recently, the Office of the Attorney General announced it had abandoned plans to appeal a court ruling that overturned the arrest warrant, leading to questions about the government’s commitment to maintaining order.

Dr. Krugu highlighted that reliable information has surfaced indicating Abagre's return to Bawku, an act he views as a provocation that could severely threaten regional peace. He urged the government to act swiftly, calling for the arrest and prosecution of Abagre should he claim the title of Bawku Naba again.

“The right to self-determination cannot be compromised, and the people of Kusaug deserve respect for their dignity and cultural heritage,” Dr. Krugu stated in his release.

He also urged the government to reinforce the rule of law, warning that failure to act decisively would compel him to take further actions to safeguard life and property in the area.

In a show of solidarity with the community and a demand for governmental accountability, Dr. Krugu has temporarily halted all campaign activities in the Zebilla Constituency.

He urged the residents of Kusaug to remain calm amidst rising tensions, stressing the importance of stability and security in the region.
