Teenage pregnancies soar in Upper West Region amidst misconceptions and Irresponsible Parenting

The Upper West Region has recorded an alarming rise in teenage pregnancies, with many school girls falling victim to misconceptions about sex education and the legal age of consent.

According to Madam Janet Kpan, the Upper West Regional Girl Child Education Coordinator, the lack of understanding surrounding existing laws has significantly contributed to the surge in early pregnancies.

"Many young girls are engaging in risky behaviors, driven by a desire for material possessions, and are unaware of the consequences of their actions," she said.

The situation is further compounded by a lack of respect among children for elders and community stakeholders, as well as the ineffective enforcement of community by-laws.

"Irresponsible parenting is also a major contributing factor, as many parents are disengaged from their children's lives during their formative years," Madam Kpan added.

She emphasized the need for responsible parenting and collective action within communities to address the challenges and protect the well-being of young girls.

She noted that teenage pregnancies have significant implications for the education, health, and economic empowerment of young girls.

Madam Janet Kpan has called for a concerted effort to provide accurate sex education and promote a culture of respect for elders and community stakeholders.

The Upper West Region saw a rise in teenage pregnancies from 8.7 percent to 9.5 percent in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Ghana Health Service.
