Several schools have locked their doors, preventing pupils from accessing classrooms as the strike action by three teacher unions continues.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) launched a nationwide strike on March 20th, demanding improved service conditions.
Despite the National Labour Commission's directive to end the strike, the three teacher unions have refused to call it off.
Info Radio visited St. Cecilia Primary and JHS, where some students were playing outside while others sat on the veranda because the classrooms were locked. The situation was the same at Mangu Basic School, where all classes were locked with no teachers or students in sight.
The Upper West Regional Chairman for the Coalition of Concern Teachers (CCT), Mr. Alhassan Salifu, emphasized that they will not return to the classrooms until their demands are met by the government.
However, the Wa District Chairman for the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr. Mohammed Anbanbeo, has assured parents that they will soon return to class after meeting with the National Labour Commission on March 26th, 2024.
