Mr Christian Papinian Akateng, the Vice Principal, Academic, Wa Technical Institute has observed that teachers who lead educational transformation processes themselves need to be transformed in terms of better conditions of service.
“It is indeed true that transformation begins with the teacher but the teacher that leads the transformational process himself needs to be transformed”, he said.
Mr Akateng made the observation in Wa on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at a ceremony organized by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Wa District, to celebrate the 2022 World Teachers Day.
Celebrated on the theme: “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”, the day was to celebrate the transformative and critical role that teachers play in growing learners' potential.
He said if the teacher must be transformed, he needs a congenial atmosphere, stable peace of mind, and respect and dignity to carry out his duties; adding that “all these must be provided by the employer”.
Mr Akateng also observed that policymakers need to shift from forcing down policies the throats of teachers to engaging the teachers meaningfully before policies are designed.
“Inasmuch as it’s difficult if not impossible to transform the employer, it’s incumbent on us teachers to live up to our professionalism to mould the future generation,” he urged teachers.
He said it requires patience, love, tolerance, accommodative nature and acceptance to build the future generation.
He further lamented some of the challenges that, affect teachers which include a lack of incentives, and inadequate resources among others.
Mr Mohamed Elyasu Anbanbeo, Chairman, Wa District GNAT, lamented that indiscipline among school children affects teachers in their transformation agenda.
He urged parents and guardians to take good care of their children when they close from school in order to produce quality leaders in future.
Mr Anbanbeo urged the government to motivate teachers for their hard work.
