Sissala East's new MP reflects on journey to parliament after five elections

Hon Issa Mohammed Bataglia in Parliament-MP, Sissala East Constituency

Issa Mohammed Bataglia, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Sissala East Constituency, has expressed a mix of emotions as he prepares to take office.

Speaking to Info Radio, Mr Bataglia described feeling reflective and a sense of responsibility as he waited to be ushered into his new role on January 7, 2025.

“Sitting there in parliament at the night of 6th [January] and waiting in to be ushered into my new office and role, around midnight I was reflecting over what God has done for me. If you ask me the feeling, I would say that it was a mix feeling, one of excitement and more importantly a feeling of responsibility that I’m carrying not to disappoint my people.”

Mr. Bataglia reflected on his journey, which included contesting in five elections before finally winning the mandate to represent his constituency.

“I have set out this goal right from school and I have been able to follow through it. At one point in my life I was like an errand boy, another point I was someone who was leading the party at a very difficult time when NDC was in opposition. I went for five solid elections; it was the fifth one that took me to parliament.  When I say five, I mean I run three primaries which were much more difficult but I succeeded and I also went in for general election, two of them, so in all five elections before I got the chance. So juxtaposing that against my background, I can only say it was an honor done me by God,” he stated.

Mr Bataglia says he is aware of the demands and challenges of the constituency and has pledged to work tirelessly to bring about positive change in the area.

“Between 2009 and 2012, I have served as the Special Aide to the Honorable Halutie Dubie. I know the demands of our people, I know the challenges facing us, I know the politics of it. I’m sure we will do what is required of us.”

Mr Bataglia pledged to work tirelessly to bring positive change to the constituency. He noted that the NDC cannot disappoint Ghanaians and pledged to harness the agricultural potential of the constituency to develop the area.

“I have always, given the opportunity, informed the world that yes, the Sissala land has its own challenges but in that challenge also lies the solution. So it is for us to put the right foot step forward to fight for that. One is harnessing the agricultural potential of that area. We will be telling the world, about the potential in Sissala East. I am not going to seek sympathy but I’m going to amplify our potential such that the world can see that we can do business in that area, develop that area and Ghana and the world at large can also benefit.”

Mr. Bataglia has expressed his willingness to serve in the government, stating that he would readily accept any appointment offered to him. Although he's not desperate for a role, he's open to contributing his skills and experience to the new administration.
