The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has called on residents in the Upper West Region to take action to safeguard the water bodies from the impact of illegal mining.
Mr Abdul-Wadud Ali, the Upper West Regional Manager of the PURC stressed the importance of protecting the water bodies. He noted that while the region may not currently experience severe consequences of illegal mining on its water bodies compared to other parts of the country, it is essential for the region to remain vigilant in preserving its water resources.
“Let us not say that it is not here. We need to create awareness. We need to call on duty bearers to protect what we have here. We shouldn’t wait for it to come here, then we now come out to complain our water bodies are going away; Ghana Water would need to shut down as they have done in other areas. We are blessed here, and we must protect it.”
Mr Ali made the call over the weekend in Wa during a public awareness event on the importance of paying for services received from GWL and refraining from illegal water connections.
Mr Akwesi Abeberes, the Upper West Regional Manager of GWL said the Low Income Customer Support Department of the GWL will soon role out a program to connect more households to their system.
“Once we deliver the water to you we expect payment so that it will oil our system to ensure that we deliver to your expectation. So we depend on the public to ensure that they pay their bills promptly, so that we too can deliver to their expectation,” he added.
