Residents of Pontie-Dankubo appeal for provision of electricity in the area

Residents of Pontie-Dankubo in the Wa Municipality have appealed to the government to come to their aid by providing electricity for the residents in the area.

They said the lack of electricity in the area has negatively affected every sphere of their life and wellbeing.

“Here, we wake up to late to prepare our children for school, but we are usually the first to go to bed due to the darkness. We contend with snakes here too,” the residents lamented.

Speaking to Info Radio News Team, Mr. Rauf, a resident of the area, said that they have written letters to the appropriate authorities including the Wa Municipal Assembly requesting electricity the area, but they are still living in darkness.

“Two years ago when we started making appeals, led by the Assembly Member of the area, we wrote to the Municipal Assembly, VRA [Volta River Authority] and the MP [Member of Parliament],” Mr Rauf explained.

He disclosed that the Assembly Member reported back that the area was awarded on contract, but that they were surprised when works were executed in other parts excluding their area.

“When we enquired, the Assembly Member told us the area was awarded to another contractor different from the one who worked on the other areas,” Mr Rauf disclosed adding that the question of when he [the said contractor] would begin works was never answered.

Mr. Patrick Diku, another resident in the area, added that the unavailability of electricity in their area poses safety and health risks to them.

“The previous night, I went behind my building and flashed on a very big snake but when I returned with a stick to kill, I had escaped. Imagine I had no torchlight.

“I had two goats and many fowls in my pen but today go there and see, nothing is left. You only hear the dogs bark and before you come out, they [thieves] have made away with a number,” Mr Diku recounted.

Mr Diku lamented that residents in the area are unable to engage in any electricity-driven businesses which also impacts negatively their economic lives.

“The fridge my wife was using to sell refrigerated beverages when we were living at Dobile [a suburb of Wa] is lying in there,” he said.

Madam Fatuma Saeed further indicated that the lack of electricity has affected their children’s academic performance as they are unable to access or leverage electronic learning means.

She added that the children are unable to learn at night or do their assignments when night falls.

The residents of the area, therefore, appealed to city authorities to come to their aid by extending electricity to the area.
