Residents of Kabanye-Koriyiree, a suburb of Wa in the Wa Municipality have expressed worry over a looming danger of cholera outbreak due to prevalence of open defecation in the area.
They complained that the open place opposite Kaara Diagnostics Services, a medical diagnostic laboratory in Wa and in front of the Wa Municipal Health Directorate has been turned into a defecation ground, a phenomenon they described as unacceptable.
Speaking in an interview with Info Radio, the residents said the situation set in when some Zoomlion officials who were detailed to ensure sanitation in the area, left about a year ago.
The residents confess that the officials became fed up with the adamancy of some residents to change from the open defecation behavior, and sent away the two officials who were taking care of the place.
They lamented that the situation is negatively affecting them in all spheres of their lives.
While they expressed mixed reactions as to the people who actually do the act in the area, they said the perpetrators do it largely in the night.
They said the Assembly Member of the area is aware of their situation but might also be scared of acting.
Meanwhile, the Upper West Regional Environmental Health and Sanitation Department, Alhassan Inusah Agambire admitted that, the department is aware of the poor sanitation situation in the area.
He has, however, said there are ongoing talks with the Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Directorate on possible ways of developing the land near the municipal health insurance office to prevent people from defecating on it.
