Residents of Baleofiili, a community in the Wa West District, have appealed to the government to reduce the prices of farm inputs to alleviate the challenges faced by farmers.
According to the residents, the high costs of weedicides and fertilizers have made it difficult for some farmers to purchase these essential supplies.
Speaking to Info Radio, they urged the government and NGOs to provide mechanization services for farmers.
“Our primary challenge is the cost of inputs; fertilizers and weedicides are extremely expensive, making them hard to afford. Additionally, we lack access to affordable tractor services; there are only a few tractors available in this area, and they are costly. We are asking the government to subsidize the prices of these inputs,” they stated.
Furthermore, the community is requesting assistance from the government to fence their land around the dam for dry-season farming. They also seek support for expanding the dam to allow more young people to participate in dry-season agriculture.
Hon. Yussif Gyezuuri, the Assembly Member for the Baleofiili Electoral Area, highlighted the main issue for dry-season farming: the need to fence land to prevent animals from damaging crops during this time.
