Queen of Peace SHS marks 25th anniversary with call for improved infrastructure

The Queen of Peace Senior High School (SHS) marked a significant milestone over the weekend as it celebrated its 25th anniversary on Saturday November 23, 2024.

The event drew a large gathering of dignitaries, including Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, Reverend Fr. Francis Bomansaan, Bishop of the Wa Diocese, staff, students and a proud alumni contingent to reflect on its journey under the theme “25 Years of Holistic Education, Prospects and Challenges.”

The Queen of Peace Senior High School was established on January 29, 1999, as a result of a strong collaboration among the Catholic Diocese of Wa, the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, and the Nadowli Traditional Council to provide holistic education for residents of Nadowli and its environs.

The school began with 76 students studying General Arts and Business. The Queen of Peace Senior High School now has over one thousand students studying Home Economics, General Arts, Business and General Science.

Mr Abaare Ib-Kuu, the Headmaster of Queen of Peace SHS, delivered his speech at the climax of the Silver Jubilee and highlighted some of the school’s achievements.

“The school is currently a Category B school. Queen of Peace Senior High School has so far churned out 23 batches with a total population of 5,166 since its establishment. I can say on authority that over 90 per cent of the products of this school shine wherever they find themselves as a result of the holistic training. The character of any of the products of this institution in any legally established organization reflects the motto of the school, Veritatis Splendor, which means let the light shine,” Mr Ib-Kuu disclosed.

He stated that for three consecutive years, 2022, 2023 and 2024 the school has taken part in the National Science and Mathematics quiz competition as far as to the national level.

“Mr Ib-Kuu continued to state: “Except in 2023, there have been some improvements over the years in quality passes in the WASSCE results. For the periods from 2019 to 2023, the percentages of quality passes were: 26.4 percent in 2019, 2020-27.5 percent, 2021-30.5 percent, 2022-31.8 percent and 26.4 percent in 2023. The 2023 batch was the worst hit of the Covid-19. However, the 2023 batch produced the best aggregates since the inception of the school."

Mr Ib-Kuu also mentioned some of the school's challenges, including inadequate classrooms, a furniture deficit, and toilet facilities, among others. He noted the school’s feeding challenges.

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, urged the students to take ownership of their educational journey. He emphasized that conquering fear is essential for achieving holistic education.

“One of the important ingredients of holistic education is to conquer fear. All of you, if you are still struggling with that, please go and work on it because fear is a disenable. It is important for us the educators and the institutions to imbibe these things and to work hard and impact them on our students. And so I move on to the children; you have to take ownership of your learning journey,” he stated.

Mr Bagbin pledged GHC50,000.00 support for the school.
