Queen of Peace Senior High School (SHS), a public second-cycle institution in Nadowli, in the Upper West Region launched it's 25th-anniversary celebrations on Monday.
The school was established on 29th February 1999 with a student population of 76 and with staff strength of 14.
The anniversary will be marked with a grand-durbar on the school’s grounds in November 2024.
The colourful event brought together alumni and other stakeholders including the Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih who was the guest of honour to lend their support for the year-long celebration.
The anniversary theme is; "25 years of Holistic Education, Prospects and Challenges."
Delivering his welcome address, the Headmaster of Queen of Peace SHS, Abaare Ib-kuu mentioned that the school since it's establishment has churned out 22 batches with a population of over 4500.
He noted that most of the graduates have excelled in their various professions due to the hard work of teachers and students of the school.
“Over 90 percent of the products of this institution are not found wanting wherever they find themselves as a result of the holistic training they got.
“We have been excelling in other regional competition. On the quality passes in the WASSCE results for the period 2019 to 2022, the percentage of passes were 26.4 percent in 2019, 2020- 27.5, 2021-30.5 and 2022 38.1 percent,” he said.
He disclosed that the school is yet to receive the 2023 WASSCE results for analysis but added that the professional results indicated that the school performed very well by obtaining grades in all the single digits.
“I’m optimistic that with hardwork, discipline and commitment from staff, students and other stakeholders, we will continue to improve on the quality passes until we hit 100 percent,” he added.
He also expressed gratitude to the government for providing the school with some infrastructural projects.
Mr. Ib-Kuu highlighted the challenges faced by the school and urged the government to address them.
“We have classes up to 45 but the classrooms are around 35; so we still need more classrooms. Furniture for the dining hall, where we are sitting we don’t have furniture for the there. We believe that though we have these two dining halls there’s still the need for us to get a bigger assembly hall.”
Mr Ib-Kuu mentioned that the school needs an additional toilet facility for the girls and the rehabilitation of the campus roads as some of their challenges.
“You can imagine the population of the students and only ten (10) of us are on campus, it is very difficult for us to instill discipline in the night. So if we have a number of staff bungalows this particular problem will also be solved,” he added.
The Alumni President of Queen of Peace Senior High School, Remus Kpan in his address emphasized the need for the school authorities to make the school a centre of learning excellence and good students’ character formation.
“We need to invest in our teaching and learning resources. These include providing our teachers with necessary training and resources to enable them deliver quality teaching that will meet the needs of our students.”
“We also need to invest in modern teaching kits and technologies that will impacts learning experience of our students,” he said.
Mr Kizito Bafara, the school’s Board Chairman, called on the staff of the school to work collectively as a team.
He acknowledged the support of old students and stakeholders towards the development of the school.
