Residents of Piree in the Nadowli Kaleo District have voiced their growing frustration over the poor condition of their roads, which they say are severely impacting their daily lives and access to essential services.
The residents speaking to Info Radio stated that the pothole-ridden roads posed significant challenges, especially during the rainy season. The community members said they often find it difficult to navigate the area, leading to delays and compromised safety for pedestrians and vehicles.
According to several residents, the lack of proper transportation infrastructure is hindering not only mobility but also economic activities.
Bawa Mark, a resident, stated that the bridge between Piree and Kangu, which collapsed, has been left unattended by successive governments for twelve years. “As you could see on your way here, the road conditions are poor, but the stretch from this community to Kangu is the worst,” he added.
Dakurah Gilbert, a resident, expressed concern about the economic impact of the poor roads on their limited finances. He noted that they have to use long roads to neighbouring communities, which they could have spent a few minutes travelling to if the road network was in good shape.
Women in the community expressed frustration over the poor roads. They called for immediate government action to address their concerns.
“This year, if our roads are not worked on, we will not vote. Look at how bad the road is. My fellow women, if they don’t give us good roads, a befitting health facility and make potable water accessible for us, we are not going to vote in the December 7 elections,” the women stated.
Saana Thomas Bondinuba, the Assembly Member for Piree, highlighted that the poor condition of the roads has resulted in numerous accidents. He mentioned that he has made efforts to bring the attention of relevant authorities to the deteriorating road network.
“The poor conditions of the roads have resulted in numerous accidents. I wrote letters to the district assembly and the Member of Parliament about the poor conditions of the road,” Mr Bondinuba stated.
