Residents and businesses in parts of Wa, the regional capital of the Upper West Region, and parts of the Wa West District have been grappling with prolonged power outages for the past 24 hours, leaving many helpless as they struggle to carry out daily activities.
The sudden disruption in electricity supply on Wednesday at 6:30 am without any warning to consumers is attributed to a fault in one of the feeder cables, as communicated by the power service providers, Volta River Authority/Northern Electricity Distribution Company (VRA/NEDCo). In a statement shared on the social media plattform of PURC-UWR , VRA/NEDCo announced, "VRA/NEDCo wishes to inform its cherished customers that it has suffered multiple HT line faults on one of its main feeders. As a result, a number of areas in Wa central all the way to Wechiau and its environs are off."
The statement further reassured affected customers that management is actively working to identify and resolve the issue. "All efforts are underway to identify and resolve the problem. Inconveniences this has caused is deeply regretted," the message read.
The power outage has had a significant impact on residents who have come to rely on electricity for their everyday lives. Schools, small businesses, and households are among those that have been left vulnerable without power, making it challenging to perform basic tasks such as cooking, studying, and operating essential services.
Businesses that typically rely on electricity for their operations have had to halt activities, leading to concerns about potential financial losses and unmet customer demands. Affected Local markets, restaurants, and shops have expressed their frustration, underscoring the urgent need for a swift resolution to restore electricity.
Residents have taken to local radio stations and social media to express their grievances while seeking updates on the restoration efforts. "This has never happened for this long. It’s affecting everything we do especially in this warm season, we could not sleep at night. The rooms were very hot," one resident lamented. "We hope VRA/NEDCo resolves this quickly as we depend on electricity for our livelihoods."
As of now, there is no estimated time for when power supplies will be restored, but the community remains hopeful for a prompt solution to what has become a critical situation. The VRA/NEDCo’s commitment to resolving the fault will be closely watched by residents as they await a return to normalcy.
As the sun sets, many in Wa are left to navigate the darkness, with the hope that brighter days—and a reliable power supply—are on the horizon.
