Paramount Chief of Wechiau decries lack of progress in district

Naa Imoru Nandong Gomah II, the Paramount Chief of the Wechiau Traditional Council in the Wa West District has decried the underdevelopment of the district since its creation 20 years ago.

Naa Gomah II pointed out that the district faces numerous developmental challenges, including poor roads, youth unemployment, lack of electricity, and inadequate health facilities in some communities.

“H. E. Namine, Ladies and Gentlemen, the constituency and for that matter the district have a number of challenges and needs, for example:

“Bad Roads in the District, Youth unemployment, some communities have no Health Facilities, some communities have no electricity e.g. Gurungu, Meteu, Kawu, Varinpere and other larger communities within the District, Completion of the E Block at Dorimon.”

The Wechiau paramount chief stated this in his welcome address to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, to the Wa West district on day one of his three-day campaign tour of the Upper West Region.

He stated that the district has been “an orphan constituency for the past eight years and we have been praying and wishing for us to come back to power and the opportunity has come, it is possible because we have done it before and we can do it again.”

Naa Gomah II said the traditional council’s unwavering loyalty to the NDC party is still intact, and it is non- negotiable.

“H. E. on the issue of needs the District need another constituency to bring governance closer to the people.  The absorption of the Wechiau and Dorimon Senior High Schools into the Educational main stream.

“When you get to the Jubilee House come early next year, Ishah Allah, remember us, remember our MP when you are making your ministerial appointments,” he added.

John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer addressing thousands of NDC supporters at the event at the forecourt of the Wechiau Naa’s palace was optimistic that the NDC would win the December 7 elections.

He assured the chiefs and people of Wa West that the next NDC government would work hard to bring the needed development to the district.

Mr Mahama said the NPP has abandoned all the developmental projects that the NDC government was undertaking in the district.

“When NDC was in government, we were undertaking a lot of projects; I remember that the Dorimon- Wa road was on contract. If NDC was still in government that road would have been completed long ago. Eight years on after we left office, the Dorimon-Wa road is still undone. There are several communities in Wa West, we were connecting to electricity, eight years on they still don’t have power,” the NDC flagbearer stated.

He emphasized that the previous NDC government had initiated several projects at the University for Development Studies (UDS), now known as the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), and the Dorimon E-block. However, these projects have been abandoned by the current government.

Mr Mahama stressed that the next NDC government will prioritize completing these abandoned projects and fixing the deplorable Wa Bole-Bamboi to Techiman road.
