The headmaster of Lassia Tuolu Senior High School (SHS) in the Wa West District, Emmanuel Banongwie, has revealed that a fire outbreak at the school destroyed over 900 tables and chairs, foodstuffs, and some priestly garments, among other items.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 am on Sunday, March 10, 2024, destroying a multi-purpose hall with a seating capacity of 1,500.
The fire consumed cooking utensils, furniture, and food, including 24 bags of maize, two bags of dried cassava (konkonte), 15 cartons of mackerel, 24 gallons of vegetable oil, a gallon of palm oil, a bag each of dried okra and salt, and other items.
The fire also destroyed 900 student desks, 500 dining tables and benches, 10 student mattresses, a public address system, musical instruments, 23 cooking pots of different sizes, five iron pots (size 30), a deep freezer, a stabilizer, and 530 service and soup pans and lids.
The school has temporarily been closed down, and steps are being taken to resume academic work.
According to Mr. Banongwie, the Ghana National Fire Service personnel were unable to salvage any property from the multi-purpose hall.
