Over 300 residents of the Siiiru Electoral Area in the Wa West District have taken to communal labour to fix a broken dam which cut off their major access road to Wa, the Upper West Regional capital and commercial hub.
The Assembly Member for the Area, Mr Richard Wulo mobilized the electorates to rebuild the broken dam while soliciting support from benevolent individuals and organisations.
The dam broke its boundaries in September 2022 following weeks of downpours, leaving the people in the area jobless and distressed.
In an interview with Info Radio on Tizene Yiri Yela, the Assembly Member said the current state of the dam has affected farmers and also affected businessmen and women because they are cut off from accessing Wa Market.
Mr Wulo noted that the situation is beyond their effort but they mobilized themselves in cash and communal labour to construct the bridge while appealing for support.
He indicated that he has laid the complaints to the necessary authorities and they are yet to come to their aid.
The communities affected by the broken dam in terms of road access include Balawa, Siiru, Pignegben and Nankpaanabule in the Wa West District as well as Kagu and Dignafuro in Wa Municipal.
Residents of these communities also depend on the Siiru dam for survival through dry season farming, fishing and rearing of livestock in the area.
The Unit Committee Chairman of the area, Mr Sumani Naa Seiba, indicated that they contributed money to buy cement, iron rods and other construction materials to fix the bridge in order to get access to the Wa market.
