The Upper West Regional Controller of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), Mr. Donald Tuor, has announced that 14,066 candidates in the region will be taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year.
Of this number, 7,428 are girls and 6,638 are boys. The examination is scheduled to take place from July 8 to July 15, 2024.
Mr. Tuor made these statements during an interview on Info Radio's Zienyaaye Upper West program with Gabriel Mwini on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. He also mentioned that across the country, over 560,000 candidates will be sitting for the BECE this year.
He assured that WAEC is well prepared to administer the examination in all districts and municipalities within the region.
Speaking about exam fraud and leaks, the WAEC Regional Controller stated that preventing exam malpractice is the responsibility of not just WAEC, but all stakeholders.
He mentioned that the council has embarked on awareness campaigns in all the districts and municipalities in the region. He noted that one of the contributing factors to exam fraud is the emphasis on certificates rather than knowledge and experience.
“We should all take responsibility to prevent exam malpractice instead of relying solely on WAEC. Emphasizing certificates over knowledge and skills contributes to cheating. We need to change our mindset and focus on actual learning rather than just obtaining a certificate.
“We have conducted awareness campaigns in every district and municipality in the region, except Wa West, to prepare the candidates for the upcoming examination,” he stated.
He explained that they could not engage candidates in the Wa West District in the wake of a tragic incident where three individuals died and several others sustained injuries of varying degrees following a confrontation between the inhabitants of Kendeu and Lassia Tuolu in the District.
