The National Insurance Commission (NIC) and its partners have embarked on a road safety regulations enforcement exercise to remind motorists of the need to observe road traffic regulations, including insuring their vehicles.
Some departments that participated in the exercise were the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
Speaking in an interview with Info Radio after the exercise, Mr Frederick Boakye-Yiadom, the Assistant Upper West Regional Manager of the NIC, said the exercise would be a regular activity and entreated drivers to ensure their road safety documents were up-to-date before they used the roads.
In all, about 30 vehicles were arrested for their failure to insure their vehicle and were compelled to do the spontaneous renewal.
The driver’s licenses and road-worthy certificates of the vehicles were also inspected by the DVLA, MTTD and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) during the exercise to ensure strict compliance with road safety regulations.
“Those who were lucky to get off the kook today, next time they may not be lucky so they should start working on their insurance”, Mr Boakye-Yiadome said.
The Upper West Regional Director of the DVLA, Mr. Thomas Zumeh, said the exercise also reminded the vehicle owners and drivers of the need for roads to comply with the standard rules.
Mr Zachariah Laari, the Acting Upper West Regional Head of the NRSA, indicated that vehicle insurance was very important as it guaranteed vehicle owners of minimizing their losses in time of any eventuality such as a road accident.
He said: “Get your insurance to be valid, your license and road-worthy certificates be valid because, at the end of the day, that is what will make the roads safe for us”.
Some insurance companies in Wa were also present at the exercise to help vehicles that had their insurance expired to renew them instantly before they could continue their journey.
