NCCE hosts Inter-Party Dialogue to foster peace ahead of December elections

The Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Wa Municipal has held a dialogue with parliamentary candidates from the various political parties in the Wa Central Constituency.

The dialogue took place on Sunday, November 10, 2024, with support from the European Union (EU) under the “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE)” initiative, ahead of the 2024 December elections.

The event also aimed to promote peace and unity ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections. The dialogue held over the weekend in Wa, brought together parliamentary candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the People's National Convention (PNC).

The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Hajia Humu Awudu, and independent candidate, Rashid Saeed Baba, did not attend the dialogue.

Mr Nurideen Mumuni, the Wa Municipal Director of the NCCE stated the idea behind the dialogues organised by the Commission.

“The idea behind this is to always reduce acrimony, insults, character assassination during our electioneering campaign. So always we intend to reduce it to issues based campaigning so that at the end of the day actors or key actors in general election will always concentrate in dealing directly with their constituents giving them what they want.”

Mr Mumuni explained that prior to each election, the NCCE conducts research, and based on the findings, the parliamentary candidates are asked how they plan to address the concerns of their constituents.

Mr Sebastian Ziem, the Upper West Region’s Chief Investigator for CHRAJ and a member of the IPDC, speaking on behalf of the Chairman, Naa Abdul-Razak Abdulai, stated that the platform is to allow the parliamentary candidate to tell the general constituents about what they know about the concerns of the Ghanaian voter and how they intend to address them.

“For anybody to be able to make an informed decision and choice in respect of our democracy, you need to have the relevant information. The research was supposed to have provided the source of information which has been put before these candidates,” he added.

Mr Yakubu Zakaria, the PNC Wa Central Constituency parliamentary candidate, outlined his vision for the constituency if he is elected in the upcoming parliamentary elections. He noted that under his tenure, no parent would buy furniture or a mathematical set for their children to attend school.

Mr Zakaria also mentioned that he would procure additional vehicles for the environmental health department to manage the waste in the municipality.

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the Member of Parliament and NDC parliamentary candidate outlined his vision for the constituency. He mentioned that he has renovated schools and clinics, drilled boreholes throughout the area, and extended electricity to many communities.
