National Cathedral Project Must Continue Beyond 2024 Elections - Upper West Secretariat

Osman Tahiru Kaapore

The Upper West branch of the National Cathedral Secretariat has called on the next government to prioritize completing the national cathedral project.

The Secretariat says that regardless of the outcome of the 2024 elections, the project is a vital national monument that should not be abandoned.

Apostle General George Apasera, Upper West Regional Chairman of the National Cathedral, speaking to Info Radio in Wa on Thursday after a one-hour prayer for peaceful elections, noted that the project’s significance exceeds partisan politics.

“We want to also send a word to the political parties, whoever wins this election, we want the National Cathedral built. We are not reading politics into the National Cathedral; we are looking at it as a monument and a place where Christians can gather to worship God.”

He advocated for separating the National Cathedral from government funding, stating that the church in Ghana has the capability to construct the National Cathedral.

“I am not advocating that they use state money to build it. They should decouple it from state funds. The church in Ghana is capable of building the cathedral ourselves.”

The National Cathedral, envisioned as a non-denominational Christian worship center, has been a topic of discussion since its inception.

Apostle Apasera stated that the Secretariat supports calls from some Ghanaians for an audit of the project. He emphasized the importance of the Cathedral to the church.

“No problem if they are looking for an audit of the whole thing, no problem. We want the National Cathedral built. I think there shouldn’t be anything that someone will want to hide. If they are hiding something, then that is a serious problem.”
