Narcotics Control Commission cautions public against substance usage

The Narcotics Control Commission, NACOC has cautioned the general public against the consumption of hard drugs such as cocaine, heroin and marijuana among others.

It said the consumption of such drugs could lead to health complications and death.

Mr. Anthony Banyetaa, an Officer at the Upper West Regional NCOC office noted that those drugs are controlled and could not be transported from one place to the other.

He explained that they are mandated by law to enforce laws against the importation and exportation of narcotic drugs in the and out of the country which people engage in as business.

Also, Madam Stella Bongkyere of the NACOC indicated that the areas in which people smuggle narcotic drugs into and out of the country is through the airport.

The NACOC therefore urged parents and guidance to take good care of their children rather than allow them to live their own life which can lead them into engaging in illicit behavior.

Recent statistics shared by the NACOC shows that, 242 persons sought treatment for drug use from 15 treatment and rehabilitation facilities within the country last year. The majority of them sought treatment intervention from Alcohol (38.0%) and cannabis (32.7%).

According to the Narcotics Control Commission, the data shows that more work needs to be done, especially in sensitizing the populace.

The Parliament of Ghana passed the Narcotics Control Commission Bill into law on Friday, March 20, 2020 which brought great excitement to many who have been following the legislative process since 2015, when the Bill was first introduced.

Many civil society organizations (CSOs) in Ghana lauded the Government for this significant moment in the history of drug policy reform in the country.

The new law makes huge inroads towards more humane drug policy, and will pave way for other good examples to emerge in the sub-region.
