Nandom paramount chief calls for Upper West Region's development narrative to change

Naa Professor Edmund N. Delle Chiir VIII, the Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area, has emphasized the need to shed the Upper West Region's reputation as the country's most underdeveloped area.

He believes the region possesses the intellectual capital and talent to drive its development, provided its people unite towards a common goal.

The Paramount Chief made these remarks while chairing the inaugural Upper West Ghana Journalists Association awards ceremony, held over the weekend.

The event, themed "Sustaining Ghana's Democracy before, during, and after the 2024 General Election: the Role of Peace Journalism," recognized eight outstanding journalists, including the Regional Best Journalist of the Year, Rafiq Salam of Joy News.

Naa Professor Delle Chiir VIII, a renowned dermatologist, congratulated the awardees and encouraged others to draw inspiration from their exceptional work. He stressed the importance of unity and collective effort in propelling the region's development.

“The label of our region being the undeveloped part of Ghana must be eroded. And this is something to tell us that there is nothing we cannot do as people from Upper West. And I am even proud to say that honestly if you see we have a lot of intellectuals from Upper West, we have a lot of people who can help Upper West grow from strength to strength.”

He called on journalists in the region to “work hard so that the name of Upper West will rise like a star and as a shining example not only for Ghana but for Africa at large.”

Naa Professor Delle Chiir VIII admonished journalists in the region to handle truth with care. He mentioned that journalists must tell truths that build society but not truths that will cause chaos. He advised journalists to promote national peace and development.

“Even as a medical doctor, I don’t tell the truth all the time. Sometimes the truth kills and causes trouble. So you should handle truth carefully. You may think you are doing good to the country; I want to be truthful. You say a truth will destroy the whole country. Will it be good for you? Can you get your peace when you say every truth? Not every truth should come out. Think of a truth that will help the country, not a truth that will cause chaos.”
