The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nandom Constituency in the Upper West Region has refuted claims that it was sponsoring a candidate to contest in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the constituency.
Mr Rahaman Abdul Yakubu, the NDC Nandom Constituency Communication Officer said the NDC had no hand in sponsoring any candidate in an NPP election.
Mr Yakubu made this known in an interview with Info Radio in response to allegations by the NPP Constituency Secretary Mr Martin Wuoyang that the NDC was sponsoring Mr Alois Kog Kyaakpier Mohl, an NPP parliamentary candidate aspirant, to contest against the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and Interior Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery.
Mr Yakubu said Alois Mohl was a bona fide member of the NPP in his own right and was instrumental and committed to the party's cause and therefore, could not be a sponsored candidate of the NDC.
“Hon. Alois is a social development consultant and has been in public service for 30years. Hon. Alois put out a flyer asking for support and it cannot be true that, he's been sponsored by the NDC,” he said.
He noted that the NPP's seemly rejection and denial of Mr Alois from the party were calculated efforts by the party to skew victory for the incumbent MP in the primaries saying that it was “just one of the many narratives to feed into their long standing hatred for anyone who refuses to be part of the cartel of bootlickers around the Hon. Ambrose Dery”.
He accused the MP of constantly being hostile to Mr Alois citing occasions where items donated by Mr Alois to the party folks in Nandom were caused to be rejected by the MP.
“When Alois gave delegates who are Muslims sugar during the 2019 Ramadan and the MP asked that they return them, was he sponsored by the NDC?
“In the run up to the 2020 elections, under the tacit directive of Hon. Ambrose Dery, 2000 T-shirts donated by Hon. Alois were rejected. Was he sponsored by the NDC?” he quizzed.
The Communication Officer emphasized that the NDC had no time and space to dabble in the “sordid” affairs of the NPP, stating that “The NDC was not the ones at the NPP party Headquarters that received and endorsed the nomination and filling of Mr. Alois Mohl, as a candidate and the NDC, therefore rejects such puerile accusations without blinking.”
Mr Yakubu said the NDC in the Nandom Constituency was prepared to annex victory from the NPP come election 2024.
He called on the people of Nandom to work hard to ensure the party’s parliamentary candidate Dr. Richard Kuuire was elected as the MP of Nandom to provide leadership that would restore their cherished values as a close-knit society and still deliver on their development aspirations.
Expulsion of Alois Mohl from NPP
The NPP in Nandom announced the forfeiture of membership of the party by Mr Alois Kog Kyaakpier Mohl in a letter dated December 14, 2023, signed by the Constituency Secretary, Mr Martin Wuoyang.
The letter cited incessant campaigning against the NPP parliamentary candidate in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 general elections by Mr Mhol which contravened the provisions of the party constitution as basis for his expulsion.
Filing of Nomination by Alois Mohl
Mr Alois Mohl filed his nomination to contest in the upcoming NPP parliamentary primaries in the constituency despite his “expulsion” from the party which he rejects, believing that as a formidable member, his conduct and utterances must be seen projecting the interest, unity and growth of the party.
He filed the nomination on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the party’s Headquarters in Accra where the completed nomination forms were received by the National Treasurer of the NPP, Dr. Charles Dwamena.
Mr Mohl indicated the following that letter which he received on December 17, 2023 via WhatsApp; he was denied a nomination form at the constituency level.
Denial and Accusation
The NPP Nandom Constituency Secretary in an interview with Info Radio on Tuesday December 26, 2023 denied knowledge of being aware of any candidate filing nomination to contest the primaries aside the incumbent MP, Mr Ambrose Dery.
He stated that Mr. Alois only participated in a funfair and his filing was illegitimate.
Meanwhile, he accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of sponsoring Mr Alois Mohl to contest against the Interior Minister, Mr. Ambrose Dery in the NPP's parliamentary primaries.
He said the party received signals that Mr. Alois was being sponsored by the NDC to run against the incumbent Member of Parliament.
