Residents of Nakori have made a passionate appeal to the Wa Municipal Assembly to provide the community with communal refuse containers to manage sanitation effectively.
The community, which lacks a single refuse container, is struggling to dispose of waste properly, leading to concerns about health and environmental impact.
Speaking on Info Radio's Zienyaaye Upper West Program on Friday, Madam Jahara Yakubu, a resident, highlighted that the absence of refuse containers is an obstacle to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
“Nakori today has developed, yet women do not have a place to dispose of rubbish. We have no choice but to dump the waste on people’s plots of land because we don’t have a single refuse container in this community.”
She also lamented the limited economic opportunities available to women in the Nakori community.
“After the farming season, most of us [women] in this community migrate to Kumasi to work and earn something to take care of our children in school,” she stated.
Madam Yakubu is appealing to the government to provide support for women in the community by offering low-interest loans. This will enable them to engage in petty trading and earn income. She believes that this support will prevent women from traveling down south in search of economic opportunities after the farming season.
Jeribulee Naa Yussif Gbognara, speaking on behalf of the chief of Nakori, stated that the absence of refuse containers in the community has forced residents to dispose of waste on individual plots and backyards.
He therefore appealed to the Wa Municipal Assembly to provide the community with adequate refuse containers to enhance sanitation management.
