Residents of Nakori are appealing to the Ghana Health Service to post enough nurses in the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound to enable them to have twenty-four-hour access to healthcare.
According to them, the health facility closes at night, making it difficult for them to seek medical attention, particularly emergency cases.
Mr Abdulai Ibrahim, Chairman of the Nakori Chansa Electoral Area Unit Committee speaking on Info Radio's Zienyaaye Upper West program, expressed concerns about the shortage of healthcare personnel at the CHPS compound.
He said “We have a CHPS Compound serving Nakori, Chansa, and Tampeini, but we still need many improvements in the facility. If my wife or I get sick and I go there at night, I won't find any workers there as they close at night. We'd like the government to assign more nurses to the facility so that we can go there at any time and find someone to take care of us.”
Madam Jahara Yakubu, a resident, stated that most women in the community prefer to attend antenatal care in Wa due to the poor state of the CHPS compound. She bemoaned the absence of health staff at the facility at night to attend to their health care needs.
“The CHPS Compound we have is in name only. During the day, there are nurses available to attend to you. However, if you fall ill at night, you'll have to figure out a way to get to Wa. Because of this, many women here choose to go to Wa for antenatal care. This situation is even lowering our birth rate.”
Jeribulee Naa Yussif Gbognara, speaking on behalf of the chief of Nakori, pointed out that the CHPS compound also lacks medications, which forces most residents to travel to Wa to seek medical care. He appealed to the Ghana Health Service to post more nurses to the facility.
