Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, has called on the people of the region, especially the border communities, to be on the watch-out for suspected individuals and groups that may want to mar the peace of the country and the region in specific with their activities.
He said the call was more imperative following activities of militant groups in neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso.
The minister explained that the peaceful atmosphere of the country could be a safe haven for these terrorist groups to plan their attacks on Ghana or other countries.
Dr. Salih made the call at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting in Wa as part of fulfillment of the mandate of the RCC as enshrined in Article 255 of the 1992 Constitution and the Local Government Act 2016, act 936.
The meeting also offered opportunity for the various Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) and some Heads of Departments (HODs) to present the progress of their localities and the projects the assemblies were implementing or had implemented to impact the lives of the people in their jurisdictions and for the development of the districts and the country.
“I must add that security is a collective responsibility of all of us. It should not be left in the hands of only the security agencies in the region and the country at large”, Dr. Salih said.
He added that the Regional Security Council (RESEC) would continue to monitor to curb any potential areas of security threat to the region such as chieftaincy and lands disputes.
The Regional Minister also urged the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs to expedite action on the settlement of chieftaincy issues pending before the House as such loopholes are breading grounds for violence in the region.
On government projects and policies, the minister indicated that in spite of the adverse economic condition currently experienced in the country, the government was determined to sustain its flagship projects including the Planting for Food and Jobs, Agenda 111 and the Free Senior High School policies among others.
Meanwhile, Naa Dikomwini Domalae, the President of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, who was also the Paramount Chief of the Daffiama Traditional Area, noted that the House has secured the services of a council to support its judicial committee in the settlement of the chieftaincy disputes currently before it.
Naa Puowelle Karbo III, the Vice President of the House, also the Paramount Chief of the Lawra Traditional Area, observed that the inadequate funding for the House has been a bane to its effective functioning.
