Members of Info Radio Children's World radio program will embark on a protest march on Friday, February 25, 2022.
This protest march is part of activities planned by the Children's for Clean and Healthy Communities in the Upper West Region of Ghana.
The aim of the protest march is for the children/students to call on municipal authorities and government agencies to reduce plastic waste and implement environmentally friendly waste disposal and management in order to create clean and healthy communities in the region.
School children from Tender Care Preparatory School, AGDAM International School, members of the Upper West Children's Parliament, members of the Upper West Regional Library Reading Club and other children from various communities are expected to participate in the protest.
The children are expected to gather at Info Radio, the media organization that runs the Action 4 Clean Communities project for and by children in the Upper West region.
The children are expected to march through the main streets of Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region, with brass bands and placards to demonstrate that they are committed to improving waste management in their communities.
The protest led by the children is part of activities planned by Upper West Kids as part of the Action for Clean Communities (A4CC) project by and for children in the Upper West Region.
The project, implemented by Info Radio in collaboration with THEIA International, a German-based NGO, is part of the Info Radio Children's World Radio program.
The Children's World Radio program is a weekly radio and field program developed by Info Radio with and for children in the Upper West Region of Ghana. The program aims to give children ages 10-17 a voice in how they see their communities and what they want for their communities now and in the future.
Using carefully selected topics such as reproductive health education, community change and development, climate change awareness and environmental education, volunteering, sports and entertainment, quizzes and debates, the program gets children to freely express their views and observations on various issues and areas that affect their personal development and that of their community.
Since its inception, the program has given children in the Upper West Region the opportunity to speak freely about themselves, their communities, and issues that affect their growth and development.
On February 19, 2022, children in the Upper West Region began a major cleanup in Wa Kpaguri, a community in Wa that is littered with plastic waste.
Hundreds of children from the Upper West Region agreed to participate in the protest on February 25, 2022 to call on the public and authorities in the Upper West Region to take action to reduce plastic waste in the region.
The child-led A4CC project is implemented by Info Radio in the Upper West Region of Ghana in collaboration with THEIA International, a German-based non-governmental organization, and financially supported by the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia and Engagement Global.
