Basic school in Kahaa in the Nadowli-Kaleo District has been faced with a myriad of challenges which impede progress of academic activities, residents say.

In an interview with Info Radio at the community, Mr Amatus Yendaw, Unit Committee Chairman of the Kahaa Electoral Area, said the school was started in the year 2010 by a community self-help initiative in which the residents build classrooms with sun-baked bricks.

According to him, few years after the government constructed a Kindergarten block and promised to follow it with Primary and Junior High School blocks but has since not fulfilled that.

He said presently the school enrolls up to Primary Six (6) with no classroom blocks apart from the aging, not-so-strong sun-baked brick classrooms which houses Primary 1 – 4 while the Primary 5 and 6 pupils receive lessons under trees.

He worried that, in the next academic year when the Primary 6 pupils would be promoted to Junior High School, they would be forced to continue to sit under the trees since they would have no classrooms to stay in.

He added that the school lacks sufficient classroom furniture for children to receive lessons with comfort, thus calling on the government to firm up steps in providing the school with enough pupil desks.

He however commended the government for posting teachers to the school.

Mr Garten Dong explained that the community took the initiative to build the school in the community to save their wards the risks of crossing deadly rivers and traversing long distances under harsh weather conditions to attend school in other communities.

He disclosed that the roofing of the structure presently housing Primary 1, 2, 3 and 4 was ripped off by rainstorms, but was later fixed by the community after they have to the Assembly to no avail.

Madam Janet Dabuo recounted the efforts it took households for the temporary school structure to be built, and lamented why the government keeps long in providing permanent and befitting structure for the school.

She said the same challenges for which the school was established to save their wards has still not been completely served with the current school situation.

She appealed to the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly and the government to come to their immediate aid with classroom blocks for the Primary and soon-to-establish Junior High Schools.
