Jorpetey Teng residents struggle with lack of potable water

Martin Kyasuo Sunti

Residents of Jorpetey Teng in the Gurungu Electoral Area of the Wa West District are facing a severe water crisis, with no access to a single borehole in their community.

The community members revealed that they are forced to trek to Gurunga or Gyinoo Teng in search of drinking water, a task that is especially burdensome for women who have to spend the entire day searching for potable water.

To cope with the lack of accessible water sources, the residents have resorted to relying on river water for their domestic needs. However, this alternative poses health risks as the residents have no other option for obtaining safe drinking water.

In an interview with Info Radio, a resident conveyed the dire situation, stating, "We don't have water. We are drinking from the valley, and it is a big problem for us. The animals drink and urinate in the water, but we have no choice but to also drink from the same."

The residents are urgently calling for assistance from NGOs and appealing to the district assembly to intervene and provide a sustainable solution to address their water scarcity.

Mr. Biirimatey James Tieribaatey, a concerned resident, emphasized the critical need for access to potable water and expressed disappointment in the lack of support from their assembly member. Despite their pleas for help, the community has yet to receive the necessary assistance to alleviate their water crisis.

The residents are calling on relevant local authorities and stakeholders to prioritize the drilling of a borehole in their community to secure a reliable source of clean water.

This plea comes as a heartfelt appeal for immediate action to mitigate the hardships faced by the residents of Jorpetey Teng in accessing safe and clean drinking water.

The plight of the Jorpetey Teng community reflects a pressing need for increased efforts to address water accessibility in underserved areas, and it underscores the significance of collaborative initiatives to ensure sustainable access to clean water for all communities.
