Investiture ceremony held for SDD-UBIDS’ first VC

A grand ceremony has been held for the investiture of the first Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), Wa at the university’s campus.

The ceremony held on Thursday, January 20, 2022 saw the conferment of duty and authority on Prof. Philip Duku Osei as Vice Chancellor and Mr Job Asante as Registrar.

The Chairman of the University Governing Council, Kweku Amoah Paintsil Esq, in his opening remarks, commended the government and President Akufo-Addo for conferring autonomy on the university to operate as a full-fledged institution.

Administering the oaths of office to the two leaders, Mr Yamoah expressed strong conviction in them to steer the affairs of the university in the best manner desired for its growth and development.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Philip Duku Osei, promised to give off his best in putting the university on the global map of excellence.

He stated that the university aims to provide transformational services to the general public, adding that the necessary structures had been kept in place to achieve the transformational agenda.

Prof. Osei said that the intention of the University is also to produce graduates who will be exposed, creative and analytical thinkers, and employable to meet the demands of society.

The newly-sworn-in VC also called on the government to fix the infrastructural gap as well as provide seed money for the university.

He said the university needs a whooping sum of 100 million US dollars to position itself to cater for the growing infrastructure needs and enrollment envisaged at 15,000 students by 2024.

President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo, on his part, said the university which he has made possible to come into being in May 2021 as established by Act of Parliament, Act 1001 (2019), occupies a special space in his life as President.

He congratulated the newly appointed Vice Chancellor and Registrar on their new roles and promised them the utmost support of himself and government.

He gave the assurance that government would take step-by-step measures to raise the seed capital for the operations of the university.

The SDD-UBIDS, formerly Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS), was established by the Government of Ghana in 2019 and given a mandate by Act 1001 of 2019. Act 1001, 2019 is also the Charter of the university, and as such having been carved out of the UDS, it has a mandate as a public university to offer programmes that will lead to the award of certificates, diplomas, degrees, Master’s and PhDs under its own name in the areas of its competencies (Law, Education, and Life-Long Learning, Social Studies, Business and Integrated Development).
