Home of Light Islamic School receives generous donation from Sharaf Mahama Foundation

The Sharaf Mahama Foundation donated exercise books and assorted items to the Home of Light Islamic School in the Wa Municipality on Monday, September 23, 2024.

The foundation donated 4000 Sharaf Mahama Foundation branded exercise books, several boxes of mackerel, tomato paste and gallons of detergents.

Mr. Dramani Yunus, representing the foundation, attributed the intervention to the orphanage's urgent needs, which had been conveyed to Mr Sharaf Mahama.

“A few months ago, we started a conversation with Sharaf Mahama about the challenges of this orphanage after visiting this place. He pledged to extend his generosity to the orphanage through the Sharaf Mahama Foundation. He sent the items this month, and we are here today to present them to the orphanage,” he stated.

Mr Yunus urged the children to take good care of the books they receive from the foundation and study hard to achieve their dreams.

He stated “I want to take this opportunity to appeal to all of you to take your studies seriously. Any one of you sitting here today has the potential to become a president, a minister, or someone as influential as John Dramani Mahama or Sharif Mahama, who made this gathering possible.”

H.E Mahmud Khalid, former Ambassador to Mali who was the guest of honour for the short ceremony, commended Sharaf Mahama for coming to the aid of the children at the school. He stated that the donation would highlight the institution's importance in attracting support from other institutions and individuals.

“I think this occasion would highlight the importance of this institution to Ghana and probably beyond, so that people who are mindful of the transformation of the youth can come to the aid of this institution. Because there is hardly any officialdom that takes place here, even somebody like me in this part of Wa didn’t know of it until just quite recently,” he said.

He praised the school management for uniting the orphans to help them build their future.

Ruwaifa Abdul-Haadi, Administrator of the Home of Light Islamic School commended the Sharaf Mahama Foundation for generous support it extended to the school.

He said “your presence here today means a great deal to us especially to the orphans whose lives you continue to touch through your kind gesture.”

He mentioned that the school was founded with the vision to provide free education and a nurturing environment to orphans.

“Over the years we have made it our mission to ensure that these children have access to only education but also a holistic care they need to thrive,” he added.

He mentioned that initially, the Iqra Foundation for Education and Development sponsored the school, but due to financial constraints and a 90% reduction in funding by the foundation, the school is now only able to charge the orphans for feeding. Additionally, the school has started accepting non-orphans and charging them fees in order to sustain its operations.

“We assure the public that orphans remain a priority and we are committed to seeing them through their education until they graduate,” he added.

The school’s management presented a citation to the Sharaf Mahama, the Founder of the Sharaf Mahama Foundation, for his kind gesture towards the school.
