Government urged to build dam for Pennitobo community

Residents of Pennitobo in the Gyilli Electoral Area of the Nadowli-Kaleo District are urgently appealing to the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to construct a dam in their community.

They emphasize that such a facility would be instrumental in supporting dry-season farming, alleviating poverty, and enhancing their overall standard of living.

Speaking to Info Radio, community members shared the significant challenges they face due to the lack of a dam. According to Mr Timothy Peter, a resident, the absence of a reliable water source has led to high unemployment among the youth and has negatively impacted livestock farming.

“The community faces many challenges. There are a lot of young people interested in rearing animals, but because we don’t have a dam, the animals have to travel long distances to find water. Some get lost, and others are stolen. Without a dam, there is no work for young people during the dry season,” Mr Peter lamented.

Other residents echoed similar concerns. Madam Joyce Nanpaala highlighted how the construction of a dam would facilitate vegetable farming in the dry season, creating jobs and improving food security in the area.

“A dam will enable us to grow vegetables and engage in farming activities all year round. This will improve our livelihoods and reduce poverty,” she stated.

Madam Dong-ma Kundi also underscored the economic benefits of having a dam, stating that it would empower parents to take better care of their children’s education.

“If the dam is constructed, our economic activities will improve. We will be able to generate income to support our children’s education and other household needs,” she explained.

With agriculture being the primary source of income for many in the community, access to water remains a fundamental requirement for economic growth and stability.

The residents are hopeful that their plea will be heard and acted upon by the relevant authorities and organizations to bring much-needed relief and transformation to their community.
